Cow Farts causing Global Warming!?

Scientists and farmers around the world are debating a very serious subject at the moment. You may not know it, but cows are actually one of the rudest animals around. In fact, they burp and fart so often and in such huge figures that the methane they release may be an affecting part of global warming. Yes, they are really talking about farting and burping cows.
Why are scientists talking about this? Good question, let's start with the science behind passing gas. Farts and burps are essentially pockets of gas that get released from human and animal bodies. Some of it is created inside our bodies as we digest food and some is ingested, when we eat or talk. This mixture is not useful to us, so our bodies propel it out as best they can, “passing gas or flatulence.”
One of the gases found in farts and burps is methane. Certain amounts of methane in the atmosphere are normal. Right along with other greenhouse gases, methane collects in the sky and traps warm air around our planet. The problem starts when the layer of greenhouse gases is too thick and too much heat is shut in. This effect is called global warming my friends!
A report published in the state of California a while back declared that dairy cows in the area were producing almost 20 lbs of gas every year. That is a ridiculously large amount of gas. If that number is correct, it could mean that cow farts are causing more greenhouse gases than pollution from cars, since California has millions of cows.
Scientists around our globe have known for a long time that animal gases could be trouble. What they cannot agree on is how big of a problem it can actually be. Even if scientists manage to measure the size of the farts or burps, they then have to work out how much methane they contain. It is very hard to measure just how much methane an animal is burping and farting out.
A Swedish university has taken this matter very seriously and has been awarded close to $600,000 in support to research this occurrence. Jan Bertilsson of the Swedish University for Agricultural Sciences stated that 20 cows will be involved in the study.
By attaching special collars around the cow’s necks, they hope to calculate the amount of methane released with each burp depending on the kind of food they consume. Mind you this is only a study on burps not farts.
I am not a scientist or anything but it looks like if we want to make a real effort at slowing down our climate change, we simply can’t only go after the cows. It just doesn’t seem to me to be the only source of the problem. What does the rest of the planet think?

  1. so the next time one of us eat a huge beany, burrito of goodness we should stop and think about how our ingesting bodies are impaling the planet with their green house gases! lol
on a more serious note though global warming is a no joke, and I think more people need to be informed of the problem we have on our hands, and the damage being caused to the planet.

I have been doing research on what information is out there for the masses to learn about global warming, I ran across this website about an upcoming antartic expedition: http://www.transantarcticexpedition.com/expedition/. It's being lead by a noted explorer named Andrew Regan. Have you heard of it?

  2. Hy My name is Adam Mittler
I think this article about farting Cows is Histarical. I have done a study of a small degree on Global Warming and this information would have been helpful in my essay for school. Leonardo Dicaprio should have had farting cows in his documentary the 11th Hour which is Phenominal. A group of scientists have looked at how Global warming is a serious problem and how it can be eliminated, however Global Warming will not be entirely resolved.

  3. Can an individual use Global Warming to make a profit. I have this book I am reading and it discusses how Global Warming is good for making an income. Can anyone describe how we can profit from this Phenomina.

  6. I this ridicules , how can methane cause global warming..feel this scientists haven't read the properties of methane. Please don't blame cows and start killing them! its we humans how have invented things and have caused Global warming!..anyways will have to check how this issue moves on from now..thanks for sharing this with me!

  7. is this for real? that's actually very interesting. i have to write on here for environmental and this is the most interesting article i could find. i actually laughed when i read it. what i want to know is, can we even stop this from happening? we can't exactly tell cows and other living things to stop farting and such.

  8. no one is posting on here anymore Mrs. Censoplano. but i thought this was interesting and i couldn't find any that actually worked. I hope i get full credit! and i actually want to know the answers to my questions!

  9. Are you kidding me? We are blaming the cows here? Lets use our noggins people. Where do we get our milk, beef and other dairy products....THAT'S RIGHT COWS! So stop pointing the finger on my moomoo's. Humans need to take credibility for the destruction they are creating on the earth. Leave my cows alone, because I don't know what i'd do without their luscious creamy delicious milk that I use with almost all four meals of the day. Even though I truly believe global warming is a governmental scam, I think the males and females of our mother earth are farting/doing more harmful things to the environment. PEACE OUT!

  10. i agree with mellymoototherescue. are we serious? these magnificant creatures are just living the life. all they want is some grass and water. and think aobut it. we're blaming global warming on COWS. but we torture cows but overfeeding them, injecting them with hormones, and trapping them in small, cement places so we can get more product from them. these buildings and factories that they stay in are creating even more pollution. leading to global warming. we are a crazy society to think that COWS are the cause of our problems here in the USA.

  11. Hey ihavetodothisforenvironmentalclass are you doign this for environmental class? Well ANYWHOOOOOOOOO: We're too busy with miley cyrus and justin bieber to be worrying about the cows. Open your eyes and smell the roses, or cow farts. Peeps are being redonkulous over here! Lets help lower the obesity rate in the USA and take a walk to the local store instead of hoping into our hummers and smoking some cigars. I'm getting rowdy over here. About to go out and give my pet cow a hug. Yes...I do have a pet cow.... So think twice about whatchu saying about my moomoo's >:(

  12. YEAH I AM! ARE YOU?! i have a pet cow too! we should totally walk them together when we take dawdle over to marrazos for a snack. we dont use cars becuase we're saving the environment. WE WILL NOT BE APART OF GLOBAL WARMING. STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS!

  13. this seems a tad ridiculous if you ask me. i don't see why any environmentalists would ever waste their time studying cow flatulence rather than something that is already know to be a leading cause of "global warming" as ihavetodothisforenvironmentalclassmentioned, we do torture the cows so that we can get more product from them, so anybody who believes that they are causing a problem should deal with those who cause them to do so. and how about other farts. do they do anything? like... pig farts, or kitten farts?

    ReplyDelete
  14. You mean stand up for your cows! Scientist these days are ruthless. Yes lets put saddles on our cows and giddy on up to marazzos for a nice snackywacky. We will not just sit here and let our world get dirty and have our cows be verbally abused.

  15. change it yo. this article is really dumb. i can't believe people actually believe that cows are the cause of our high greenhouse gas levels. like get real. we cause so much stuff in our world. yet we can't seem to take ownership. instead, we blame harmless creatures that can't help what they do.

  16. goodnight yall, SEE YOU IN SKOOOOOOOL! HI MRS. CENSOPLANOOOO!!

  17. i don't know how too :( well at least she'll believe it's me :) but agreed.. this is a silly and pointless article that i believe has almost no value to the advances in environmental science. or cows.

    ReplyDelete
  18. This is pretty redonk. I agree with them ^. Cows?! ARE YOU SERIOUS?! What did the cows ever do to you??? If it really is flatulence then why arent we blaming ALL ANIMALS? I don't know of any land-living creature that doesn't fart. C'mon, give the cows a break.

  20. i wonder why we never see thick Cloud of Pollution over the skies where these Cow Farms are Located... cuz as you mentioned Cows are causing more Pollution than Cars ---

why is it that we see huge Pollution Smog covering the Biggest cities of the world that you can not even see the Stars at night due to this Pollution smog....

  21. Yeah anthropogenic global warming is a complete lie, we do live in a solar system which is a part of a galaxy, I’m sure that’s a bit more influential than us.. Not to mention all those scientists who have confirmed that the data was smeared to gain a political effect (i.e. population reduction)… Species extinctions and fluctuating weather patterns are a natural process and it’s likely that we’ve simply entered the decline of the Bird and Mammal dominated biosphere and into a new phase. It is also quite likely, if you take a thorough look at the fossil record, that the highest of those species, that has developed so far, is meant to take over the biosphere and it seems to me that it’s the human species that fulfills this role. That is, if we choose to not act like animals and be intelligent, choosing not to be mislead by falsified graphs and non-scientific generalizations. Population caps or population reduction is a desire for the extinction of the greatest creation the biosphere has been able to produce; humanity. It also is rather peculiar to me, and seems a strange coincidence, that a bunch of uppity oligarchs like Prince Philip and Sir David Attenborough are pushing this green population control garbage. I think it may be that they only want them and their families to live on planet earth so they can have their way with a bestial mankind (and also with donkeys like their buddy Bertrand Russell)… hmmm… Well according to this video and James Dwight Dana, the entire biosphere had conspired to create a species capable of cognition, and the intentional stifling of this cognitive power is going against the intended design of the creator. Maybe all this “naturalist”, “green” anti-development/anti-progress stuff is just unnatural Imperial Brainwashing…?

  23. As we have become dependent on fossil fuels and consuming lots of fuels that becomes the reason of carbon pollution and this increases the temperature of the earth. Our planet is getting hotter increasing the chances of hurricane damage and tornado.
